Eligibility: The HBCU Design Challenge Contest ('Contest”) is open to residents of the 50 States and the District of Columbia, 18 or older at the time of entry, who are currently enrolled in or have recently graduated from (within the last 2 years) a Historically Black College or University (‘HBCU”). Employees of Target, its affiliates, subsidiaries and their immediate families are not eligible to participate in the Contest. Void where prohibited by law.

Contest Period: Entries can be submitted beginning May 7, 2020 until 11:59 PM CST on June 13, 2020. (Note: The submission period for this program is now closed). 

How to Enter: Following the detailed procedures identified on the HBCU Design Challenge website, Contest Participants (‘Participants”) have the opportunity to submit entries based on Design Project Option #1 and/or Design Project Option #2. They may choose to submit an entry based only on one of the design project options, or may choose to submit a maximum of two design project options (one from each category). Participants, however, are eligible to have only one entry become a Contest finalist.

Judging Criteria: Entries submitted will be judged by a company-wide cross- functional team. The decisions of the judges are final. We will be looking for design solutions that meet the following six (6) criteria:

  • Superior Design and Aesthetic Sensibility;
  • Exemplifies Creativity and Original Thinking;
  • Clearly Articulates a Solution to the Surfaced Design Question;
  • Positive Impact on the Guests we Serve and the Communities we Operate in;
  • Ability to be executed Physically on Apparel;
  • Ability to be Sold in Target Stores and Online

Prizes: There are a total of nine (9) Contest Finalist Prizes:

First Place Prize Winners (3) - Total Value $5,450:

  • $1,500 prize
  • Apple + Adobe prizes (Total value approx. $3,950)
    • (1 per) Apple MacBook Pro 16” (Space Gray)

  • Their story will be featured in our online Black History Month marketing program

Runner-Up Prize Winners (6) - Total Value $2,280:

  • $500 prize

All Participants Receive:

  • An invitation to join Studio Connect, Target’s exclusive guest engagement app;
  • The option to view Target HBCU Design Challenge exclusive videos and webinars as a virtual introduction to Target’s product development process and team;
  • The opportunity to add the The HBCU Design Challenge as a line item on their resume.

Winner Selection & Notification:

  • Contest Finalists will be notified by email on approximately June 26, 2020.
  • First Place Prize Winners will be notified by email on approximately July 20, 2020.
  • Prizes will be awarded on approximately September 1, 2020.

Acknowledgments: By participating in this Contest, Participants are confirming that you understand that submitted concepts may or may not be part of Target’s previous, current or future business endeavors. By uploading a submission you agree to give Target a royalty free, irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, license for incidental use of your submission in any form, media or technology now known or later developed, only for historical, promotional or marketing purposes.

Documents: All Finalists will be required to execute and return a Release/Wavier Agreement. In addition, Potential First Place Winners will be required to execute and return a Conveyance of Intellectual Property Agreement. No First Place or Runner-Up Prize will be awarded to an individual until they have met this requirement. Finalists are responsible for any prize taxes and will be issued an IRS form 1099 where required by law.
